Penrose is a cocktail bar at 149 Jalan Petaling, in the middle of Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown. Founded by Jon Lee in 2022, it is the highest-ranked bar in Malaysia on Asia’s 50 Best Bars — No. 10 in 2025 — named The Best Bar in Malaysia in both 2024 and 2025, and Tatler Malaysia’s Bar of the Year 2026. The bar works to five pillars: alcohol, flavour, taste, body and dilution. Every drink is built against them with classics first, technique in service of flavour rather than in place of it. The room is the other half of the idea. Seating is bar-counter only, by design. Every guest faces the pass, every drink is made in front of the person drinking it, and service runs across the counter rather than around it — closer to a chef’s table than a lounge. Penrose serves drinks only; there is no food menu. The counter is small, so book ahead.
