Austa is a multi-faceted culinary space in Almancil that blends restaurant, café, and community hub into a unified vision. The design, led by Studio Gameiro, combines local craftsmanship and natural materials—such as a striking rock-salt bench sourced from nearby mines—with clean, minimal aesthetics. Guided by Chef David Barata, Austa’s menu changes seasonally and emphasizes locally sourced, sustainable ingredients, as well as small-batch, low-intervention wines. It’s a place grounded in place-based storytelling and culinary sincerity.
Austa brought together gastronomy, design, and community in a project rooted in sustainability. Located in Almancil, the space features an interior designed by Studio Gameiro, using regional techniques and materials—such as lime plaster and a 230-million-year-old rock-salt bench - to create a minimalist atmosphere that remains deeply connected to the local context. Chef David Barata’s menu highlights ingredients from the restaurant’s own garden, from regional producers, or from the Andalusian coast. Breakfast offers organic eggs, roasted Hokkaido pumpkin, artisan sourdough bread, and local goat’s milk yogurt; lunches feature artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, bread, and smoked fish; while dinners bring wild mushrooms, fresh fish from Sagres, or local meats. With a connection to the land in the Algarve, Southern Portugal. Their mission is to provide a platform for the small, independent projects and producers of the Atlantic and Andalusian coasts; quality-driven minds who provide us with seasonal ingredients and stories that we are proud to talk about and that we feel represent a better future for food, both in our region and beyond.
